About
This home was constructed in 1881 by the Canfield Lumber Co. for Frank Winkel. Winkel, a veteran of the Civil War, arrived in Manistee shortly after the war was done and found work with the Canfield family in their mill located near the mouth of the Manistee River Channel where he eventually worked as a lumber scaler.
After Winkel became disabled in a work accident, the Canfields constructed this home for him and his family, which remained in the Winkel family for many years following his passing.
