The Wilcox Home

On July 10, 1878, Jackson B. Wilcox, who came to Manistee in April of 1867 to practice dentistry, purchased the land and home of William and Martha Crippen on the corner of Tamarack and Second Street. Wilcox's purchase was made in preparation for his marriage to Susan Sweetnam from his hometown of Mauston, Wisconsin. After the December wedding the couple settled into their home where they raised three children. The eldest daughter, Jennie, had married a Mr. Taber, and moved into the home in 1937. Numerous improvements were made to the home while Mrs. Tabor lived there, including a basement floor, central heating, and electricity. The home, which is believed to be one of the oldest homes in the city, was later passed to her daughter and son-in-law Marion and Andre Henry. It has now passed on to another generation, making a total of six generations of the same family who have enjoyed the home.
