The Sands Mansion Homes

Even though the Sands Mansion was torn down, the brick was reused to construct four homes on the property; one on Oak Street and three on Fifth Street, all of which are still standing today. In August 1920, the Manistee News Advocate reported on the construction of the four homes as such: "All the materials of the old building have been carefully salvaged, and indeed most of the boards and timbers are of a quality that would be hard to find in the market at any price today. These are the finest grades of pine and Norway, with scarce a stick of hemlock to be found. There are enough bricks in the pile apparently to build half a dozen average sized buildings." "Three of the dwellings which will occupy the site will face on Fifth Street, while the fourth will face Oak Street. Two are to be built under the supervision of Contractor Charles Anderson and two under that of Contractor Gust Peterson." "While it will be a matter of sentimental regret to many Manisteeans to see this noble mansion of many happy memories removed, the erection of four fine modern dwellings in its stead will be a noteworthy improvement."
