The Russell Building

This building was constructed by Edwin Russell in 1893. Edwin was one of the five Russell brothers that moved from Chautauqua County, New York to Manistee in 1869. Upon their arrival they embarked in the hardware, lumber, and grocery businesses. Regarded as pioneer residents and businessmen as the years went on, it was Edwin that continued the grocery business from this address. Edwin's son, Curran N. Russell continued to operate the grocery store from this address for several decades. Curran would later become the first director of the Manistee County Historical Society.
