The Laird Home

Born to Scottish parents in England, world-renowned ship captain John Laird arrived in Manistee in 1868 to begin survey work around Lake Michigan. It was here that Laird was superintendent of harbor improvements, however this involved a larger area than just the local harbor. The Lairds were highly respected in Manistee and were an integral part of local society. In 1882, Laird purchased a lot at 402 Maple Street and built this beautiful Victorian Gothic home. Laird did not live long to enjoy his new home as in December 1886 he passed away. Today, his home remains as an elegant monument to Manistee's first harbor superintendent.
