About
This Italian Villa style home was thought to be built shortly after the Civil War. In 1878, it was occupied by Michael Englemann, who had arrived in Manistee thirty years prior. Engelmann would go on to become mayor of the city and one of the area's well-regarded businessmen.
Upon taking possession, Engelmann completely renovated the home, which was surrounded by abundant fruit trees. As the years went on, Engelmann added rooms every year until it reached the extensive proportions.
In 1879, the home was reported by the Manistee Times as being, "without a doubt, the prettiest place in Manistee." Today, the home is occupied as apartments.
