About
Charles Dovel was the son of local attorney Andrew J. Dovel, who himself owned a large home at 421 First Street. Charles, also an attorney, would later go into practice with his father and in 1905, the firm of Dovel & Dovel was established in Manistee.
In September of 1904 construction began on this Fifth Street home and was completed the following spring. In June of 1905, it was reported in the Manistee Daily News that Charles and Molly Dovel were moving into their new home which was built of the suburban cottage style. It was also noted that it was one of the handsomest of the newer homes built in the city at that time.
