The Benedict Home

E. E. Benedict came to Manistee in 1867 where he formed a law partnership with T. J. Ramsdell. The firm was successful and soon occupied a leading place among the lawyers of this part of the state. In 1875 each partner began the construction of large homes. Similar to the home of A.O. Wheeler in that it perched atop a hill overlooking Manistee, the Benedict Home, orginally three stories high, was built using Milwaukee brick and had a Mansard roof. Upon completion of the structure, it was reported in the Manistee Advocate that, "... it is the most convenient, compact and best-finished building in our city, and reflects credit upon the carpenters, Messrs. Green & Long, and Mr. H. W. Woodrow, the mason." Years later, the second and third stories of the house were removed leaving the first story which remains today.
