The Aarons Building

In April of 1910, second generation clothier Harry Aarons revealed his plans for a brand new, three-story structure where he would open a new clothing store. Referred to by the local newspaper as "a magnificent structure that will enhance the appearance and increase the price of real estate in that locality very materially," the Aarons Building was completed one year later. Upon opening, the second and third stories were occupied by several business offices including those of prominent Manistee lumberman, Edward Buckley. In addition, the third story of the building is also noted to have housed the offices of the Manistee County Emergency Relief. Through her time working for the relief agency, Louise Armstrong authored the book, "We Too Are the People" which became a scandalous portrait of Manistee County during the Great Depression. Over the years the building would be home to drug stores, insurance offices, dentist offices, law offices, and radio stations.
