About

Smith W. Fowler, who was the editor of the Manistee Times and a civil rights lawyer, built this home in 1872. Originally it was an Italianate building with a central tower and a widow's walk. In 1910 it was purchased by Dr. James King who remodeled it into a private home and hospital. It is one of the few buildings remaining in Manistee that has a mansard roof.
