The simplicity of this clapboard structure belies its importance in Vermont's early history. The General Assembly of the State of Vermont met here in 1791, 1793, 1795, 1797, and 1804, and in 1786 soldiers repelled a mob of farmers incited by Shays' Rebellion. Originally on Court Square, it was moved to its current location in 1880 and has since served as a reading room, recreation center, tenements, and even a roller-skating rink.
