The Robbins, Kendall and Lawrence Company built this armory in 1846 to fill a U.S. government order for 10,000 rifles. The firm pioneered precision manufacturing — using machine tools to produce interchangeable parts — and achieved international fame at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London. Since 1966 the building has housed the American Precision Museum, holding one of the nation's great collections of historic machine tools.
