Within the walls of this former tavern, delegates hammered out the details of the Vermont Constitution in July 1777 — the first in the nation to prohibit slavery and grant universal male suffrage. Built in 1774 by Elijah West, the building was a popular gathering spot for locals and the original home of the Vermont Journal. In 1914 the Old Constitution House Association relocated it to this lot, donated by the Evarts family, and the State of Vermont assumed ownership in 1961.
