Robbins and Lawrence pioneered "precision manufacturing" — using machine tools to make interchangeable parts.
The company won international fame at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London by demonstrating interchangeable parts.
Since 1966 the building has housed the American Precision Museum and its collection of historic machine tools.
