Did You Know?

  • The Vermont Constitution was signed inside this former tavern in July 1777 — the first in the nation to prohibit slavery and grant universal male suffrage.
  • The building was constructed in 1774 by Elijah West and served as a popular local gathering spot and tavern until about 1848.
  • It originally stood at the corner of Main and Depot streets, where Constitution Common is today, before being moved and later relocated here in 1914.
  • After the Old Constitution House Association preserved it, the State of Vermont assumed ownership in 1961.
